Job Description:
Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. May explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.
What Phlebotomist Do:
Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. Some explain their work to patients and provide assistance when patients have adverse reactions after their blood is drawn.
How to Become One:
Earn a high school diploma or its equivalent and complete a phlebotomy training program. After completing an education program, students can choose to become certified professionals. Certifications are available from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Association of Medical Personnel. West Virginia does not require additional licensure for phlebotomists unless they perform moderate complexity tests such as bleeding time as part of their duties.
