What Allergists and Immunologist Do:
An allergist/immunologist (commonly referred to as an allergist) is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma and other allergic diseases. The allergist is specially trained to identify the factors that trigger asthma or allergies. Allergists help people treat or prevent their allergy problems.
How to Become One:
After completing a four year bachelor's degree, students then take four years of graduate education leading to a degree in medicine (M.D.) or osteopathy (D.O.). After receiving a medical degree, students must complete three more years of residency in pediatrics, internal medicine or combined med-peds before applying for an allergy / immunology fellowship (2-3 years).
