Job Description:
Diagnose and coordinate all aspects of the birthing process, either independently or as part of a healthcare team. May provide well-woman gynecological care. Must have specialized, graduate nursing education.
What APRN – Certified Nurse Midwife Do:
Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) provide a full range of primary healthcare services to women in the United States, including routine gynecological checkups, family planning services, preconception care, prenatal and postpartum care, and, of course, delivering babies.
How to Become One:
Earn your credentials as a registered nurse (RN) by enrolling in an accredited institution of higher education. Pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). If a bachelor's degree was not achieved, obtain a bachelor's degree before applying and enrolling in a graduate program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) and achieve a post-graduate certificate, master's or doctorate degree. These typically take a minimum of 24 months to complete, although some accelerated options may be available for candidates with post-baccalaureate degrees. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) exam in order to become a certified nurse-midwife (CNM).
