What Sports Medicine Physician Do:
Sports medicine doctors are either orthopedic surgeons or primary care physicians who prescribe treatments for professional and amateur athletes. They're trained to address issues associated with nutrition, sports psychology, and substance abuse and may also counsel athletes on injury prevention.
How to Become One:
After completing a four year bachelor's degree, students then take four years of graduate education leading to a degree in medicine (M.D.) or osteopathy (D.O.). After receiving a medical degree, students must complete a residency, typically 3 years in family medicine. In addition, individuals must complete a one-two year fellowship in sports medicine.
